Arlovski Surges In New UFC Fighter Rankings On Silva KO
- Updated: September 16, 2014
Heavyweight Andrei “Pitbull” Arlovski (23-10, 1 NC) surged seven spots in the Ultimate Fighting Championship Fighter Rankings from the No. 14 contender to the No. 7 after his first round knockout of former No. 4 contender Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (18-6, 1 NC). Silva plummeted five spots to the No. 9 heavyweight contender with the loss.
Arlovski took to a hit-and-run strategy early in the first round of their heavyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 51 on Saturday in which he was landing strikes and getting out of the pocket before the Brazilian could respond. As “Bigfoot” pushed the action and began to move forward and cut off the angles against his Russian opponent. “Pitbull” caught Silva coming in with a sharp right hand that sent him to the mat where Arlovski finished him with hammerfists until the fight was stopped, earning a Knockout of the Night bonus.
No. 10 contender Jessica Andrade (12-3) failed to gain any momentum in the women’s bantamweight rankings in handing her opponent Larissa Pacheco (10-1) her first loss in a first round submission. Andrade controlled the fight from the start after absorbing a couple of strikes from Pacheco she pushed the fight to the cage and then to the mat where she unleashed a technical round of ground and pound until she worked in the submission late in the first round.
No. 7 bantamweight contender Iuri Alcantara (31-5, 1 NC) was also unable to work his unanimous decision victory over Russell Doane (14-4) into any movement upward in the fighter rankings. Alcantara clearly took the first two rounds with his striking and his ability to keep of the ground and keep the fight standing. However, when Doane could get the fight to the mat he was able to dominate those portions of the fight and seemingly took the final round from Alcantara.
UFC Fight Night 52 will feature a heavyweight bout between No. 6 contender Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt (9-8-1) and No. 8 contender “Big Country” Roy Nelson (21-9) on Saturday night.
