PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Emmanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton (24-7) retains his title with a third round knockout by a spinning backfist against Joey “The Mexicutioner” Beltran (15-11). Newton’s win in the main event capped of a solid night of fights at Bellator 124 on Friday night.
Newton opened the fight with a solid first round in which the two fighters battled for position and the pace of the fight. “The Hardcore Kid” attempted a couple of takedowns but was unable to hold Beltran on the mat. Newton lands a series of shots as the round ends. In round two “The Mexicutioner” presses the pace, forcing himself inside Newton’s range and is able to come on the better end of most of the exchanges in the round.
Beltran continues his success into round three and continues to press forward and keeps Newton moving, trying to find his range. Eventually, Newton’s range found Beltran with a spinning backfist from the cage that immediately floors the challenger and ends the fight. After the fight, Newton spent a brief moment with his next challenger Liam McGeary (9-0) who won the Light Heavyweight tournament final against Kelly Anundson (9-3).
Anundson dominated most of the one round fight with McGeary after he was successful on an early takedown and managed to keep him pinned to the mat where he unleashed ground and pound while staving off several unorthodox submission attempts from the bottom. Eventually McGeary pulled off a reverse triangle from side control that led to Anundson’s tap and the end of the fight.
Bantamweight L.C. Davis (22-6) pulled off an impressive win against Zeilton Rodrigues (12-4) by a unanimous decision (30-27 on all cards). Davis dominated each round with a grinding style that led to takedowns and ground control in which he worked strikes against Rodrigues who was unable to keep the fight up and take advantage of his striking experience.
In a lightweight fight Ryan Couture (9-3) got a first round submission win against Tom Bagnasco (3-3). Couture worked the match to a body lock and then drug Bagnasco to the mat where he controlled the fight with a back triangle and got the submission with a rear naked choke.
