Souza, Rothwell Make Big Jumps In UFC Fighter Rankings
- Updated: September 9, 2014
Ronaldo Souza and Ben Rothwell make big jumps in the latest Ultimate Fighting Championship Fighter Rankings coming off big wins at UFC Fight Night Foxwoods on Friday. The UFC updates its fighter rankings every Monday after weekend events have been completed.
UFC middleweight Ronald “Jacare” Souza (21-3, 1 NC) makes a two-spot jump as he leapfrogs No. 3 contender Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (24-10) and new No. 4 contender Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (21-5) in the latest UFC middleweight division fighter rankings. Souza defeated No. 7 contender Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi (35-5-2) with a third round guillotine choke submission that dropped Mousasi into a tie with Michael “The Count” Bisping (26-6) who defeated Cung Le (9-3) at UFC Fight Night Macao last month for the No. 7 contender spot.
Belfort hasn’t fought since last November and isn’t scheduled to fight again until his title bout with UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman (12-0). Machida hasn’t fought since losing to Weidman at UFC 175 in July by unanimous decision. Anderson “The Spider” Silva (33-6) remains the No. 1 contender as he rehabs his leg that he broke in his December rematch with Weidman after losing the title to him in July of 2013.
Ben Rothwell (34-9) made a huge jump in the UFC heavyweight fighter rankings from being unranked and a huge underdog against No. 7 contender Alistair “The Reem” Overeem (37-14, 1 NC) to being the new No. 9 contender in the division. Rothwell knocked out Overeem in the second round of their fight on Friday with a right to the side of his head that wobbled him before Rothwell finished him with a flurry of punches.
In the loss, Overeem drops three spots in the rankings to become the new No. 10 contender in the division. This division saw the most movement this week as Stipe Miocic (12-1), “Super Samoan” Mark Hunt (9-8-1) and “Big Country” Roy Nelson (21-9) each moved up a spot to the No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8 contender spots respectively.
