PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Nate Diaz will make his return to the octagon in the co-main event at the first event in Arizona on December 13th. Diaz hasn’t fought since he defeated Gray Maynard (12-5-1, 1 NC) with a first round knockout in November in a contract dispute of sorts.
Diaz will face No. 3 ranked lightweight contender Rafael dos Anjos (22-7) who has been known more for his ground game but has recently made fans notice his striking with back-to-back wins by knockout over Jason “The Kansas City Bandit” High (19-5) and former UFC Lightweight Champion and current No. 4 contender Benson “Smooth” Henderson (21-4).
The other side of the co-main event will feature a heavyweight bout pitting No. 2 ranked contender Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (16-3) and No. 4 contender Stipe Miocic (12-1) as both fighters look to continue their climb and positioning for a shot at UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velaquez (13-1).
Dos Santos has a longer road to the title having lost twice to Velasquez in two of his last three fights. The Brazilian was once champion, defeating Velasquez in a first round knockout at UFC on Fox 1 in November of 2012 as part of a nine fight win streak that Velasquez would also snap at UFC 155, taking the title in a unanimous decision. Dos Santos then beat Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt (10-8-1) in a third round knockout at UFC 160 before losing in a rematch to Velasquez at UFC 166 in a fifth round knockout.
Miocic has won six of seven fights since joining the UFC which includes a current three fight winning streak that started with a win by unanimous decision over “Big Country” Roy Nelson (21-10) at UFC 161. The Ohio native then took a unanimous decision win over Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga (16-8) in January before knocking out Fabio Maldonado (21-7) in May.
