UFC Fight Night: Ronaldo Souza vs Gegard Mousasi Preview

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Machida vs MousasiMASHANTUCKET, Conn. – Middleweight contenders square off in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Friday night as Ronaldo Souza fights Gegard Mousasi. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (20-3, 1 NC) is the No. 4 contender in the middleweight division and his opponent in Mashantucket, Connecticut will be No. 7 contender Gegard Mousasi (35-4-2).

Souza fights out of Brazil and uses a combination of takedowns, submission and strength in his fights that have propelled him to three straight wins since joining the UFC. However, the Brazilian fighter is on a six fight winning streak coming in to this bout with a win by unanimous decision over No. 15 contender “Limitless” Francis Carmont (22-10). In the fight, Souza landed seven more strikes but was successful on two takedowns to none by Carmont while also making three submission attempts.

Prior to the win over Carmont, Souza had won four straight fights in the first round, two by submission and two by stoppage. His win over Carmont actually snapped a five fight streak of finishes. The Brazilian will finally have his chance to measure up against a UFC top 10 opponent in Mousasi.

Mousasi is an Iranian but is fighting out of The Netherlands and brings a well-rounded fighting style to the octagon. The Iranian had a four fight winning streak snapped at the hands of former champion and No. 2 contender Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (21-5) by a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night in February. In the loss, Mousasi out-struck Machida by 10 strikes and each had a take down.

However, Mousasi would rebound quickly at UFC Fight Night in May with a first round submission win over No. 14 contender Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz (13-5). In the fight, Mousasi again out-struck his opponent, this time by 15 strikes and made good on his second submission attempt to take down another contender.

Both fighters are looking for their first top 10 win in the UFC middleweight division and the opportunity to move up in the rankings.
