UFC: Joe Lauzon Earns Record 13th Performance Bonus

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon (24-10) took home his 13th performance bonus in defeating “Maverick” Michael Chiesa (11-2) with a stoppage in the second round after a massive gash opened up on Chiesa’s eyebrow. Lauzon has the record for the most performance bonuses among Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters with his performance bonus in UFC Fight Night Foxwoods on Friday night.
The “Fight of the Night” honor went to Lauzon and Chiesa for their fight that was pretty even up to the point of the stoppage. Lauzon caught Chiesa with a knee to the forehead as Chiesa leaned over in the round and the doctor stopped the fight shortly afterward much to the chagrin of the lightweight. The “Fight of the Night” honor was Lauzon’s sixth.
The Massachusetts native earned his first performance bonus with a “Knockout of the Night” when he knocked out Jens Pulver at UFC 63 in 2006. Lauzon hasn’t won that bonus again, but has six “Submission of the Night” bonuses for the remainder of his performance bonuses.
Middleweight No. 4 contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (21-3, 1 NC) earned a performance bonus in his submission win over No. 7 contender Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi (35-5-2) on Friday. Souza was behind on strikes by 19 but had four takedowns to none when he pulled off the submission in the third round of their fight. Souza caught Mousasi on the mat and jumped a guillotine choke from the position that led to Mousasi’s tap and the huge win for Souza.
Heavyweight Ben Rothwell (34-9) received a performance bonus for his knockout of No. 7 contender Alistair “The Reem” Overeem (37-14, 1 NC) in their heavyweight bout on Friday. Rothwell and Overeem went through a series of sharp and brutal exchanges before the Wisconsin native, broken arm in tow, landed a right hand to Overeem’s head that sent him wobbly before pouncing and landing a flurry of blasts to force the stoppage.
