UFC: Overeem, Struve Square Off In December Event
- Updated: September 18, 2014
Ultimate Fighting Championship No. 11 heavyweight contender Alistair “The Reem” Overeem (37-14, 1 NC) has a chance to get back in the win column with a match agreed to against Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve (29-6) at a UFC Event on December 13th. The matchup of vaunted UFC strikers should prove to be an entertaining bout on a card that will also contain a lightweight bout between Jamie Varner (21-10-1, 2 NC) and Drew Dober (14-6).
Overeem is looking to silence his critics, having lost three of his last four fights, including his latest disappointment in a first round knockout at the hands of No. 10 contender Ben Rothwell (34-9) at UFC Fight Night: Jacare vs. Mousasi a couple of weeks ago. The Englishman looks to return to his championship form that was displayed in his unanimous decision win over No. 13 contender Frank Mir (16-9) at UFC 169.
Struve won four straight fights, all finishes, before falling to No. 6 contender Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt (9-8-1) at UFC on Fuel TV 8 in March of 2013. The Dutchman was forced to pull out of his UFC 175 fight with Matt Mitrione (8-3) and has been out of the octagon for more than a year while battling a career-threatening heart condition. Struve will need to be on his game to get past the striker he’ll be facing in December.
Former WEC title holder Varner has struggled since joined UFC with a 2-4 record, having lost his last three fight, and looks to rebound from having been knocked out in each of his last two fights. At UFC 173 in May, Varner lost his last fight in a first round knockout by James Krause. Varner will battle Dober, who is 0-2 in UFC events, losing both fights by unanimous decision with his last loss coming at UFC Fight Night Munoz vs. Mousasi in May.
Middleweight Derek Brunson (11-3) will be facing UFC veteran Ed “Short Fuse” Herman (22-9, 1 NC) in the event as well.
