UFC: Rothwell Knocks Out Overeem With Broken Arm
- Updated: September 7, 2014
MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – Heavyweight Ben Rothwell (34-9) won the UFC Fight Night Foxwoods co-main event with an amazing, one-armed, first round knockout of Alistair “The Reem” Overeem (37-14, 1 NC). Well, not technically one-armed but with one good arm as Rothwell absorbed a kick from Overeem that broke his arm, yet he kept fighting and pulled off the first round knockout.
Rothwell and Overeem made it halfway through the first round having served several brutal exchanges at one another in the round. Powerful strikes were flying from both fighters with each having opportunities to work the fight to his advantage in the round. Rothwell got the knock out following the end of a series of strikes from Overeem. Somewhere in the series of exchanges Rothwell took a kick to the arm that caused the injury.
“I ate a kick, didn’t block it properly and he broke it. I knew I did not want to block a kick again,” said the Wisconsin-native, “I had a feeling that something could have been wrong. That’s the good thing about a fight, the adrenaline’s going.”
The performance was exactly what the heavyweight needed coming back from serving a suspension for failing a post-fight drug test following his last win in a third round stoppage against Brandon “The Truth” Vera (12-7, 1 NC) last August.
Even UFC President Dana White couldn’t help but be impressed with Rothwell’s performance, “He got kicked in the arm and knocked Alistair Overeem out with a broken arm.”
Overeem may have come into the fight overconfident as he promised to destroy Rothwell in the fight, instead of celebrating a win The Netherlands fighter is working through another tough UFC loss.
“Unfortunate turn of events! No damage.. And will be back in the gym soon to improve. Spirit is still high. Thanks fans for your support!” Tweeted Overeem.
“I’m feeling like you just witnessed what happens when you just believe in yourself,” said a confident Rothwell, “And now I’m ready to make my may to the title. This just proves it, right here.”
